Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my Illinois Tech number with Microsoft Teams Phone?

  • Yes. Illinois Tech phone users will keep their existing phone numbers. Your phone number will be added to Teams Phone during the migration process. After migration, you will be able to make and receive calls using your Illinois Tech number within Teams Phone.

Can I continue using my desktop phone, or do I need to use a computer or mobile phone?

  • You can continue using your existing physical handset alongside the Microsoft Teams app on your computer or mobile device.

If I receive a call, will it ring on all my devices (handset, desktop app, and mobile app)?

  • Yes. Incoming calls will be displayed on all three devices, and you can answer from any of them.

Will my calling plan change for Teams?

  • No, your Teams Phone calling plan will match the one you had for Clearspan Communicator App or the current plan assigned to your physical handset.

What are the installation and service costs for Microsoft Teams Phone?

  • The University covers the cost associated with this service.

Can I call 911 using Microsoft Teams Phone Service?

  • Teams Phone supports 911 emergency calling from the Teams app on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and web browsers. However, location accuracy may vary.
  • For best results, do not use the Teams app to call 911. Instead, use a physical handset or your mobile phone to ensure location accuracy.

How do I know if my Illinois Tech number has been migrated to Microsoft Teams Phone?

  • If you see a dial pad when clicking on the Calls icon in Microsoft Teams, your phone number has already been migrated.

Can I have multiple phone numbers assigned to me?

  • No. Each employee is assigned one Microsoft Teams phone number, linked to their Hawk ID.

Can I use my headphones with Teams Phone?

  • Yes. Most headsets compatible with your computer will work with Teams Phone, but some provide better performance than others.
  • Recommended headsets:
    • Wired headsets with noise-canceling microphones for optimal reliability and audio quality.
    • Wireless headsets may be used, but some users have experienced poor audio quality.
    • While built-in computer speakers and microphones may work, a wired headset with a noise-canceling microphone is recommended, especially in noisy environments.
